1st prize work‘floating paradise'

人の繋がりは妙である。
ある日ウエブで国際コンペを検索中、バンクーバーでのBIMPEというミニ版画のコンペを知る。そういえばオランダで知り合ったカナダの版画家はバンクーバーって言ってたっけ。彼女らの所属するマラスピナ版画工房もどうやら近くらしい。
応募してみたら、幸運にもグランプリだった。大賞作品は１年前オランダで作った「floating paradise」。そもそもこの作品、命名はドドである。僕としてはユトレヒトの運河に住む船上生活者（リッチな）をモチーフに描いたのだったが、完成作を見たドドは、「いや、これはfloating paradiseだ！」という。彼によると、このユトレヒトの近くの大きな運河に、巨大な幾艘かの船がすなわち「飾り窓」になっているスポットがあるらしい。男達はそれぞれチャリや車でブラブラ出かけ、飾り窓見学をする様がコッケイなのだそうだ。作品の窓の部分が「飾り窓」にも見えたのだろう。僕はこのネーミングがとても気に入った。
さて、一等賞なので授賞式に出席することにする。オランダ知り合いのカナダ版画家、ジェッリ、マライカ、キャサリンに連絡を取り、ジェッリの家に３日間お世話になる。滝のような雨の中、キャサリンがバンクーバー空港に迎えにきてくれた。其の晩、マラスピナの版画工房でのアメリカ人木版画家のオープンニングとトークショウに出席。マライケなど久々の再会。翌日、BIMPEの授賞式。１５秒間スターの気分で、シャベリマクリ。翌日ここで活躍する日本人アーチストを、ここ在住のMarikoさんの案内で訪ねたり、ジェッリに画廊案内してもらったり、マライケ宅でパーティー、と、超過密濃厚スケジュールで、身も心も大満足の５日間。
このようにして、人と人は繋がるのだなあーと涙と感謝でいっぱいです。
One day I checked about International Print Competition on web site. I found BIMPE to be held in Vancouver. I remembered that Canadian printmaking artists who I met them in Utrecht last year, live in Vancouver. I applied to this competition. Fortunataly I got a first prize.
Tell you the truth, prize work ‘floating paradise’was named by Dodog. I made it in Utrecht studio last year. When I finished to make it, Dodog saw it and said “This is a floating paradise!”. Actually I already named it ‘boat people'. But according to him, there are red- light big boats on the cannal near there. My work looks like that. A lot of men are visiting there by bikes or cars every day. Their atmosphere are little funny, he said. Unn.. I think it is a nice title , isn't it!
I desided to join the BIMPE's reception party. Before I go, I sent e-mail to Gerri, Catherine and Marijke. Their answer were very kindly ones. Catherine picked me up from the airport, then visited Gerri's house. At the evening we joined Karen's opening & talk show in Malaspina print studio. Next day Gerri brings me to some galleries by car, and we joined BIMPE reception party in Federation Gallery. Much people gathered there. I seem like a star for just 15 seconds, although Warhol said- in 15 minutes-. I think I could have good counversation with Canadian artists. Next day Mariko assited me to meet other Japanese artist, to visit museum, and to go to the window shopping. Then we visit Marijke's elegant house for party. We ate deliciouse salmon and had a lot of fun. I was very happy to stay 3 nights in Gerri's house.
I really really appriciate their warm friendship. I will never forget these 5 days in Vancouver.
